BONJOUR!
Imagine your child growing up as part of an open-minded, fun-loving, bilingual family. Imagine them being encouraged and supported to pursue their dreams. Imagine us together, as birth and adoptive parents, building a bond over the years, strengthened by our shared love for your child. Imagine us together, ensuring your child feels proud of their adoption story and confident with their place in the world. These are our hopes and dreams for our family formed through adoption. More than anything though, we would like to hear what you hope for, and we promise to work with you to make it happen. We are honoured that you are taking the time to learn more about us. We can't wait to share our love and lives with a child, and we hope that through this book you will see that we will make a wonderful family for your child. Let’s get started, shall we? FALLING IN LOVE Christophe’s birthplace: Le Havre, France Lorraine’s birthplace: London, Ontario Where we met: Oxford, England Where we got married: Stoney Lake, Kawarthas, Ontario Where we live now: Toronto, Ontario Christophe was born in France, and Lorraine was born in Canada. Our paths crossed for the first time in 2002 during travel in Oxford, England. We spent an amazing month together in a youth hostel before heading our separate ways to continue our travels. Saying goodbye was very difficult, but we were committed to keeping in touch; and so for the next four years we maintained a trans-Atlantic relationship through frequent phone calls, e-mails, and plane trips. In 2006, Christophe made the difficult decision to leave France and move to Canada. He became a permanent resident in 2008 and a citizen in 2014. We were married in 2012 in a ceremony by a lake, where we spent a fun-filled weekend with friends and family. OPPOSITES ATTRACT Ours is truly a story of opposites attract! For example: Christophe tends to be more creative, and Lorraine more analytical; Christophe is spontaneous, and Lorraine, a planner; Christophe prefers the summer, and Lorraine, the spring and fall; and Christophe cheers for the Montreal Canadiens to the dismay of Lorraine, who is a Toronto Maple Leafs fan. As in all relationships we sometimes have differences of opinion, which we have learned to resolve peacefully and respectfully; overall however, our differences keep life interesting and balanced. ABOUT CHRISTOPHE by Lorraine As a father, I know Christophe will encourage your child to work hard, play harder, and stay true to who they are. Christophe loves to juggle and will attempt this skill with every item he comes across…sometimes more successfully than others! Christophe enjoys collecting all sorts of things, including comics, vinyl records, post cards, and antiques. Lorraine enjoys organizing Christophe’s treasures to keep the house tidy! Christophe puts everything he has into all he does. Whether for work or for play, Christophe always gives all of himself to the task at hand. Christophe loves his job as a French Immersion elementary school teacher, and he uses a combination of novel teaching approaches and consistent routines to bring out the best in each student. His goal is to inspire his students to be excited to learn, and he is very good at this. It would not be unusual to walk in on a French freestyle rap session in his classroom. |

Relationships with family and friends are a priority for Christophe, and he has never hesitated to offer a helping hand.

Of course, all these qualities will make Christophe the most devoted and fun-loving father. Your child will be the apple of his eye, and will know the safety and support of this dedicated man.
ABOUT LORRAINE by Christophe
As soon as I saw Lorraine’s smile, I knew she was the one for me.
Lorraine loves to experiment with new recipes from around the world…sometimes more successfully than others!
Lorraine is a huge fan of the Olympics and avidly watches all events of both the Summer and Winter Games. She volunteered at the Parapan Am Games when they were held in Toronto.
After meeting Lorraine, it only took me a week to know that we would spend our lives together. Lorraine is one of a kind and is everything that I would look for in a wife and best friend. Her honest and gentle smile is what makes her beautiful.
It is natural for Lorraine to take care of others’ needs before her own, and so it is logical that she became a nurse. With ease and brilliance, she will be able to attend to every scrape your child will have, complete with colourful bandages and a loving hug to dry your child’s tears.
Lorraine is the smartest and most dedicated person I know. She excelled at university and has two bachelor degrees and a master’s degree. Since graduating from nursing school, Lorraine has used her skills in many different environments, ranging from providing direct care to patients to giving lectures to nursing students. She now works to prevent the spread of germs within a hospital. During the Ebola crisis, she even travelled to the Democratic Republic of Congo to work with UNICEF!
Lorraine has changed my life and has made me a better person. Her energy and strength are contagious. Lorraine will be the mother that every kid dreams of; she will be empathetic, fun, and full of love and smiles. Most importantly, she will always be there for your child, loving, supporting and nurturing him or her.
OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH YOU
We would be honoured to participate in naming your child with you.
We want to stay in touch with you so you are an involved and important part of your child’s life.
Our hope is to have an ongoing, positive and open relationship with you. Much like any other relationship, ours could develop naturally over time, strengthened by our shared love of your child.
So what does open adoption look like with us? Well, there are so many opportunities for us to stay in each other’s lives. Absolutely, visits with you will be a priority, if you are comfortable with this. We often use Skype to see the smiling faces of our nieces and nephews in France, and we can Skype with you if distance is an issue. We would love to get together a couple times a year and celebrate important dates (with lots of food, of course). Plus, there are photos, e-mails, texts – so many options in this day and age to stay connected.
Know that if you choose us, we will always be here for you, and would hope that your child could reach out to you whenever they need. We also understand that life can take twists and turns, so your need to have more or less contact at certain times will be respected.
COME DINE WITH US
In order to help you decide if we would be a good fit as parents for your child, we would like to share what we hope dinnertime will look like in our home. We believe eating together offers many health and social benefits but, most importantly, builds a family unit.
During the week, we will look forward to coming together around the dinner table after school/work to get updates on each other’s days. Christophe will probably make jokes and ask your child all about their day. He will probably also tell us about the exciting world of primary school soccer and the team that he coaches. Maybe your child will like soccer and play on the school team as well?
Lorraine might discuss one of the interesting infectious disease cases she saw at work, but then have to stop when she realizes not everyone finds nursing stories and eating dinner to be a good mix (lol).
Our main focus will be listening to your child share with us the ups and downs of their school day, who said what to whom, what made them laugh, what they learned and what caused them concern. We will provide guidance if needed, but mostly we will just listen and soak it all in. Sometimes we will be speaking French, sometimes English, and sometimes both at the same time. Naturally your child will be bilingual because, in our home, we speak both languages.
We will talk about adoption and how it brought us all together, and we will give thanks to you for making this happen. You will always be respected, honoured and appreciated in this family! And, if you are comfortable with the idea, we hope that sometimes you will consider joining us around the table.
PARENTING
We look forward to continuing our family traditions, and to creating new ones with you and your family.
Regardless of what path your child takes in life, we will encourage your child to be a kind, responsible person instilled with the values of respect, openness, and accountability.
Our main goal is that, as an adult, one day your child can reflect back on their life and say, “I had a happy, loving and fun childhood with loving adoptive and birth parents!”
If we are chosen to be your child's adoptive parents, we will ensure that they always have everything they need (which may not necessarily be the same as everything they want). We feel children should be encouraged to be independent while always having a home base to return to for love and support. We think children should also have the opportunity to pursue activities that are of interest to them without being overwhelmed with non-stop schedules. Unstructured playtime should be ample to encourage creativity and independence. We will establish routines and set appropriate limits, but give your child lots of freedom to experience life and reach their full potential.
FRANÇAIS
We speak both French and English at home, and we often switch languages within the same sentence.
French language and culture are a part of our lives, both inside and outside of our home. We have many Francophone friends, and Christophe is a French Immersion teacher. Christophe’s family lives in France, and we visit at least once a year, usually in the summer. A child in our home will grow up immersed in both Canadian and French culture. With us, your child will be bilingual, naturally.
The backgrounds you and your child may bring to our family are very important to us as well, and we look forward to learning about and celebrating these with you. Do you have a certain language you hope your child will learn? Or perhaps family traditions you would like us to integrate into your child’s life? Tell us about them!
THE PEOPLE WE LOVE
All of our friends and family members are excited to meet the new addition to our family, and are delighted by our decision to adopt.
We have five nieces and nephews in France and Canada! Creating memories with cousins at home and abroad could be a highlight of your child’s youth.
Lorraine’s parents are retired and live near Huntsville, Ontario, on a large property that is great for snowshoeing, hiking, and campfires. They love hosting big gatherings, and we always leave with our belts a little tighter, thanks to Lorraine’s mom’s delicious cooking. They will eagerly make the trip to Toronto to help out whenever needed. Lorraine’s younger brother lives with his wife and their daughter in London, Ontario, and we enjoy getting together with them regularly.
Christophe’s family lives in France. His parents and younger sister live in the region of Brittany, by the sea. His younger brother is a firefighter in the Alps. Both siblings have two children, a boy and a girl each. Christophe has many aunts, uncles, and cousins, so family gatherings are always lively and fun. We are fortunate to have been able to welcome many of Christophe’s family and friends from France to our home and have enjoyed sharing the beauty of Canada with them.
We have a large and diverse group of friends whom we also count among our family. Christophe has made good friends in Toronto, many of whom have also immigrated to Canada. Lorraine has known her best friends since high school, and they get together regularly. They all have small children who we think will make great playmates for your child.
OUR HOME
We own a detached house on a quiet street in the east end of Toronto. There is a lovely deck and fenced-in yard where we spend lots of time in the warmer months barbecuing and entertaining. There are two bedrooms on the second floor, one for us and one for a child. We will decorate the second one when we know more about who will be joining our family. Perhaps we could work on this together?
Christophe enjoys working in the garden, where he grows his own herbs and vegetables, an activity he will share with your child. There are many parks, schools, restaurants, and activities nearby, along with trails that are great for running, biking, or just a leisurely stroll. The beach is a short distance away and is a great place to spend a summer day with a child. We love spending weekends close to home watching movies, cooking our favourite foods, running, biking, and exploring our neighbourhood. Of course, as soon as we adopt, our entire life will revolve around activities your child enjoys. Anything that will make them smile, learn, grow and be happy will be part of our new life as a family of three.
ISLAND LIFE
Imagine your child spending their summer days under the sun in beautiful Northern Ontario, and their nights playing games and laughing with family and friends.
During the spring, summer, and fall months, we head to Lorraine's parents' cottage as often as possible. The cottage is on a small private island close to North Bay. The separate cabins for eating and sleeping were built in the early 1900s and still retain much of their original charm. Activities include swimming, fishing, boating, hiking, canoeing, and volleyball, to name just a few. There is nothing better though than spending a lazy summer afternoon on the dock. Sometimes when we are there, we are working hard to make sure everything stays in tip top shape, but our efforts are always rewarded with delicious meals prepared by Lorraine's mom!
Along with trips to France, this private island cottage will be central to your child’s summer months. Learning to jump into the water from the dock, enjoying family barbecues, and spending time with those they love – all these things will be our focus for your child.
ADVENTURES
With us as your child’s parents, the world will be their oyster!
We love trying new things and exploring other parts of Canada and the world. One of the things we love most about Toronto though is that it gives us the opportunity to do this without even booking a plane ticket. We have both, however, been fortunate to travel to countries in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Caribbean. These experiences have taught us openness, humility, and adaptability. Most importantly, our travels have given us the opportunity to meet amazing people from many different backgrounds. Your child will always be part of these adventures.
MERCI!
Thank you for the time you have taken to learn more about us; we would welcome any questions you may have. We would really look forward to getting to know you. Even though we may not have met, know that you are already in our thoughts and we wish you peace as you search for your child's family. Of course we hope it is us; there would be nothing we hope for more. But we respect your decision and wish you all the best during your pregnancy and future years to come.
With love,
Lorraine and Christophe
