Adoption 101

Picture
Adoption! Wow! Maybe you knew you were ready right away, or maybe it has taken some time to get here, but now it is time to move forward and learn more about adoption in Canada. Your first step is to decide if you want a Public (children's aid), Private Domestic (private adoption of a Canadian newborn baby), or an International Adoption (adoption from another country). AdoptionProfiles.ca focuses mostly on Private Domestic Adoption. It is important to understand that private domestic adoption in Canada is organized differently in each province. Some provinces have complete control of the adoption process, while other provinces have private agencies and permit online matches. It is important for you to contact an agency in your province to find out the rules and regulations - just google your closest adoption lawyer or agency and give them a call for more information. It is also vital to understand that it is illegal for you to offer or give ANY compensation to a birth family to encourage an adoption placement. When you have made your phone calls and learned a little bit more about what adoption looks like in your province you can move forward with your adoption journey and start your preparations to become adopt ready. Adoption preparation can include a Home-study, Pride training, deciding what kind of adoption you want, learning about open and closed adoptions, creating your Adoption Profile Book, and finally, registering with adoption agencies.

Home Study & Pride Training

Once you have made your decision to adopt, and picked an agency, licensee or practitioner to work with, you now have to complete what is called a Home-study, as well as your Pride Training (if required by your province). The Home-study includes multiple meetings with an adoption worker, RCMP and police checks, a medical evaluation and other such paperwork such as external references. It usually takes a few months to complete your Home-study and costs vary as to who completes this Ministry required paperwork for you. Your Pride training stands for Parent Resources for Information, Development and Education and costs and class availability varies. It is best to contact your local adoption agency, adoption worker or adoption lawyer in your area to find out more about specifics, availability and costs.

Open Adoption - What does that mean?

Picture
Most adoptions today are open. While you organize your Home-study and do your Pride training you will hear and learn more about open adoptions in regards to your adoption plan. What is an open adoption? Well, an open adoption is an agreement between the your future birth parent(s) and yourself regarding the contact you will have as you move forward with an adoption and parent an adopted child. This could include visits, letters, photos and the general sharing of information between your two families. With the help of your agency, social worker or adoption lawyer they will help you understand why open adoption is a vital and important part of parenting an adopted child. Of course, there is also semi-open adoption plans, as well as closed adoptions. However, what kind of adoption you have is usually decided by the birth parent(s) so it is important to consider how you feel about adoption and an open adoption plan. The truth of open adoption, in our eyes is this: You can not deny your child was born to another family, and denying them that truth, or access to these relationships will only teach your child that something is wrong with their birth families...and thus you are telling them there is something wrong with THEM. Children need to belong, not only to where they are, but where they have come from as well. So if you want to be a great parent, be one. Manage your insecurities and fears, investigate how to move forward in a positive light, and give your child the best you can - appreciation for their roots and wings to grow.

What is an Adoption Profile Book?

Picture
When a pregnant woman/family is making an adoption plan, they are provided multiple Adoption Profile books of couples ready to adopt. These Adoption Profiles of waiting families include a letter written to the potential birth family covering a variety of topics. As well these books include photos of you and your life. An Adoption Profile is how you connect with a potential birth parent(s), and IT IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF YOUR ADOPTION PROCESS. It is vital you put together a book that accurately and authentically communicates who you are to your potential birth parent(s) so they accurately learn about you - so they can get a feel of who you are and what an adoption plan with you might look like. If you look through our Waiting Families page you will find many of the adopt ready couples have included their books online that you could look through. Of course, there are many articles out there talking about what to included, topics to cover, how to chose your photos etc when making an Adoption Profile book so take some time to read them. It can be a very fun process, but it can be surprisingly daunting for others.
